Supplementary Weaves is a 2 day workshop taught by Charlotte Grierson and held at Cockpit in Deptford. This workshop is suitable for early stage weavers through to intermediate level. The aim will be to build your understanding and confidence so that you can go on to use supplementary weaves in may ways in your weaving.

Adding anything to a ground weave that does not cover the whole warp can be considered a supplementary weave. This can be in warp or weft or both. It is great for creating spot patterns, distorting threads and creating textural weaves. This workshop will cover the technicalities of putting on supplementary warps and what you should consider and plan when designing a cloth.

During the workshop you will cover topics such as:

  • spot and dot patterns
  • creating distortions
  • creating texture using tension

Working on looms set up with a range of different warps; threadings and materials, you will be able to weave samples to try a range of possibilities of supplementary warp and weft. You will have supporting handouts to help and develop your understanding. You will build your confidence to explore and experiment with a wide range of wefts.

To conclude the workshop we will evaluate the range of samples you have woven and identify the characteristics and opportunities of supplementary weaves and what you need to consider when weaving them.

You will take home:

  • handouts
  • your own notes and paperwork
  • samples you have woven.
